The art of woodcarving, while still valued in Europe, has all but been replaced by machine-carved and cheaply pressed wood ornaments in America. The all-too-common Made in China inscription has replaced the proud and skilled craftsmen who gave us the intricate and beautiful designs found in abbeys and churches throughout Europe.
However, there is still a small, exclusive community of woodcarving artisans who are still committed to preserving the craft. Evan Davis is one of a few in Arizona who study and enjoy creating art from raw wood using hand tools and centuries-old techniques.
